The Green Blanket

The Great Green Blanket is a European initiative that aims to transform unused city rooftops into a connected network of green infrastructure. A large urban green carpet capable of cooling cities, improving air quality, managing rainwater and bringing nature back into built spaces.

Unlike isolated interventions, the Great Green Blanket operates on a systemic scale: each green roof is designed as part of a larger urban ecosystem, capable of generating long-lasting environmental, social and economic benefits.

European cities are facing rapidly rising temperatures, with urban surfaces frequently exceeding 50°C during heat waves. This phenomenon has direct effects on people’s health, the energy consumption of buildings and the quality of urban life.

At the same time, millions of square meters of flat roofs remain unused. The Great Green Blanket was created to respond to this urban climate emergency through nature-based solutions, scientifically validated and already successfully adopted in various urban contexts.

The goal of the Great Green Blanket

The initiative’s goal is to transform up to 30% of unused roof surfaces into functional and connected green roofs.

This threshold is essential to achieving a real impact on an urban scale.

The Great Green Blanket is a long-term project, with a horizon of 2050, fully aligned with European climate objectives. Its development follows a progressive and scalable approach: it begins with the implementation of pilot projects, evolves into the creation of local networks of green roofs, and gradually extends to urban and metropolitan scales, becoming a model replicable in various European cities. Every roof built today contributes to building the green infrastructure of tomorrow’s cities.
